Tax Payer Appeal Process

What can I do?

  • In addition to your final decision notice, you will be provided with a form to file an appeal before the Utah State Tax Commission. Should you be dissatisfied with the recommendation made by the Salt Lake County Board of Equalization, this form will give you instructions on how to file your appeal before the State Tax Commission.
  • This appeal must be filled out and sent back to the Auditor's Office within 30 days of receipt of a decision decision notice. The Salt Lake County Auditor will then file the appeal before the Utah State Tax Commission on your behalf. If this is not completed within the indicated time frame your appeal to the State Tax Commission will not be accepted.
  • Check out the Salt Lake County Board of Equalization Administrative Rules if you are interested in the rules that govern the operations of the Board.
  • Salt Lake County Board of Equalization Appraiser Licensing Information was adopted in 1997 after the State legislature made some significant changes to the laws governing appraisers in the State of Utah. If you are submitting an opinion of value to the Board as someone other than the property owner, you should be aware of these rule changes.
  • Any tax representative who files appeals with the Board of Equalization should also be aware of the Salt Lake County Board of Equalization Guidelines for Tax Representatives established by the Clerk of the Board for 2010.
